The Dangers of the Internet

While the Internet provides fun and education for kids, it also poses safety threats.  It takes a mature child to recognise the risks and dangers that lurk in the cyberspace. Sadly, not all parents are aware of such hazards.

It’s important to be aware of what our kids see and hear on the Internet. Who they befriend might endanger their lives so, it’s crucial that parents understand the potential perils of the Internet and talk to their children about them.

The Internet gives us lots of ideas and information. This rich educational resource helps us to expand our sphere of knowledge in ways we have never imagined but amongst the many good websites, are some illegal sites that are not suitable for kids.

Millions of people are hooked to the Internet but I do not like to use it because looking too long at the computer screen hurts my eyes.  Besides, there is a lot of possible harm in excessive usage of computers.  Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is caused by prolonged repetitive hand movements, such as those involved in computer use.  Symptoms include intermittent shooting pains in the hands, wrists, forearms, and back.  One can also get back trouble from sitting too long in a slouching position. Another affliction which many people overlook is mind damage from reading too much nonsense from the Internet.

A young Internet user has to be very careful and be aware of the dangers of using chat and instant messaging services. Pedophiles, cyber stalkers and other online predators are considered among the biggest dangers for pre-adolescents and teenagers in popular and highly populated chat rooms like MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger. Adults who are sex offenders and rip-off artists who pose as kids in chat rooms will offer to exchange personal information, such as addresses and phone numbers.  This action could put a naïve youngster and his entire family at risk.

Using the Internet greatly increases the chance of our computers getting affected by the deadly viruses.  Once the virus spreads into our computers, it can damage important files and in some cases can cause the entire hard drive to crash.

The above reasons are more than enough to deter me from being addicted to the Internet.  I do not want to waste too much time in the cyber world.  I want to spend more time doing some other fun things in the real world!
